Food Poisoning in Antalya? Here's What to Do

Unwell with vomiting or diarrhoea during an Antalya holiday? Check the warning signs, learn how to replace lost fluids, and find out when to request a doctor.

Vomiting, diarrhoea or stomach cramps can quickly interrupt an Antalya holiday. The immediate priorities are replacing lost fluids and knowing when you need medical attention. If you feel sick, start with small, frequent sips rather than trying to drink a large amount at once. NHS: dehydration.

Call 112 for an emergency in Turkey. This includes confusion, difficulty waking, serious breathing problems, sudden severe abdominal pain, or vomit containing blood or material resembling coffee grounds. Do not wait for an app booking when these signs appear. NHS: food poisoning, NHS: dehydration, Türkiye emergency health services.

    How Docio Can Help

For a non-emergency concern, you can request a doctor through the Docio app, sharing your symptoms, exact location and language needs directly. Before confirming a visit, check the arrangements, price and what is included. A hotel visit may be suitable, depending on your condition, location and whether an appropriate clinician accepts the request. You do not need a hotel intermediary to start that conversation.

    Recognise the Symptoms

Food poisoning can cause nausea, vomiting, loose stools, abdominal cramps and fever. Symptoms may begin hours or days after exposure, sometimes later, so the last meal you ate is not necessarily responsible. Many cases improve within a week, but worsening symptoms should not be ignored. NHS: food poisoning.

Dizziness, a dry mouth and noticeably less urine can point to dehydration. In babies, watch for fewer wet nappies, reduced tears or unusual drowsiness. NHS: dehydration.

Food poisoning is not the only possible explanation for a stomach upset. A clinician can assess whether the pattern fits gastroenteritis or needs investigation for another cause.

Salmonella has appeared in historical reports concerning travellers returning from Turkey, including Antalya. The UK Health Security Agency investigated clusters in 2023. That report does not establish a current outbreak or identify the cause of your symptoms. UKHSA: 2023 investigation.

    What to Do Immediately

Focus on replacing the water and salts lost through vomiting and diarrhoea. A pharmacist can advise on oral rehydration salts. Mix each sachet with exactly the volume of safe drinking water specified on its packet, then sip regularly. Do not guess the dilution or assume every product uses one litre. Very sugary drinks can worsen diarrhoea. CDC Yellow Book: travellers' diarrhoea.

Rest and eat when you feel able; smaller meals may be easier, and fatty or spicy foods may be uncomfortable. Continue breastfeeding or normal-strength formula rather than diluting feeds. NHS: food poisoning.

Avoid alcohol while replacing lost fluids. Pay attention to whether you are drinking enough to keep up with losses and whether urine output is returning towards normal. NHS: dehydration.

    When to Call a Doctor

    Arrange prompt medical assessment if:

    • Repeated vomiting prevents you from keeping drinks down.
    • You pass very little urine or remain dizzy when standing.
    • Diarrhoea contains blood.
    • You have a high fever, particularly around 39°C (102°F) or above.
    • Diarrhoea continues beyond three days.

These are reasons to seek care, not signs to wait out until the end of your holiday. CDC: food poisoning symptoms.

Seek advice sooner for a baby, an older person or someone with a weakened immune system. A baby who stops feeding or a young child showing dehydration needs prompt attention. If you are pregnant and develop fever with flu-like symptoms, contact a doctor. NHS: food poisoning, CDC: food poisoning symptoms.

If emergency signs appear, call 112 rather than waiting for a routine visit. If timely non-emergency care cannot be arranged through your preferred route, seek another available medical service.

What a Food Poisoning Doctor in Antalya Can Assess

A medical assessment is about choosing appropriate care, not automatically prescribing a drip. Explain when symptoms began, how often you have been sick, what you can drink and when you last passed urine. Mention your medicines, allergies and existing conditions.

The clinician may examine you, check your pulse and blood pressure, and decide whether tests or hospital treatment are necessary. MedlinePlus: dehydration.

If a visit to your accommodation is appropriate, our guide to arranging a hotel doctor in Antalya explains practical questions to ask. For problems arising outside usual hours, see getting a doctor at night in Turkey.

    Do You Need IV Hydration?

If you are searching for IV hydration in Antalya, start with an assessment of why you are unwell and how dehydrated you are. More severe dehydration may require intravenous fluids and hospital care. A clinician should decide the treatment and setting. MedlinePlus: dehydration.

Replacing fluid is not the same as treating every possible cause of food poisoning. An IV should not be presented as a guaranteed cure or a promise that you will recover within a few hours.

What About Antibiotics or Diarrhoea Medicine?

Antibiotics are not recommended for mild travellers' diarrhoea; their use depends on severity and the suspected cause. Do not start leftover antibiotics. Medicines such as loperamide may temporarily reduce symptoms, but should not be used as self-treatment when diarrhoea comes with blood or fever. Ask a clinician or pharmacist what is appropriate for you. CDC Yellow Book: travellers' diarrhoea.

Do not give diarrhoea-stopping medicines to children under 12. NHS: food poisoning.

    Keep the Practical Details Clear

For a hotel or villa visit, have the full address, room or apartment details and a way to contact you ready. Confirm the consultation fee and ask whether tests, medicines or procedures would cost extra.

Ask what medical documentation can be provided, and keep any report, prescription and itemised receipt. Check your insurer's requirements directly; neither a hotel referral nor an app booking guarantees reimbursement or a particular document's acceptance. GOV.UK: travel insurance.

Protect Other People While You Recover

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Do not prepare food for others while unwell or for at least 48 hours after symptoms stop. CDC: preventing norovirus.

Avoid sharing towels, and clean frequently touched bathroom surfaces. Stay out of swimming pools for at least 48 hours after vomiting and diarrhoea stop; follow any longer restriction advised for a diagnosed infection. NHS: diarrhoea and vomiting.

If departure is approaching, see our guide to being sick before your flight home from Turkey for questions about medical assessment, airline requirements and documents.

For non-emergency medical help, start a request in the Docio app. Describe what is happening so the next step can be considered around your needs.
