Fitting Docio Around Your Existing Practice

A practical guide to making room for Docio visits alongside your existing commitments, using weekly working hours, online availability and a realistic service radius.

Clinic sessions, rota commitments and time outside work already shape your week. For an independent doctor considering additional visits, the practical question is where those visits could fit comfortably.

Docio gives you controls for your weekly working hours, current availability and service radius. Used thoughtfully, these let you organise the time and journeys you are prepared to offer, while reviewing individual requests before taking on a visit.

Start with the Time a Visit Really Needs

A patient visit occupies more than the consultation itself. Your plan needs to allow for travel, accessing the location, assessing the patient, completing documentation and reaching your next commitment.

If a clinic session ends at 17:00, a visit immediately afterwards may leave little room for an overrun or the journey. A more realistic starting point is a period with enough space on either side.

Consider beginning with one manageable evening or weekend period. After completing visits, compare the time you allowed with the time the work actually required. That gives you a useful basis for adjusting your availability.

Set a Weekly Schedule You Can Maintain

Docio’s availability scheduler lets you choose which days are active and set a start and end time for each day. You can use a preset as a starting point or customise the hours to reflect your own working pattern.

For a doctor with changing commitments, this provides a practical way to keep the schedule aligned with the week ahead. Enable the days you can cover, leave other days off and save changes when your circumstances change.

Choose hours you can realistically support, including the work around the visit. A larger availability window is useful only when you have the capacity to fulfil suitable requests within it.

Keep Your Online Status Aligned with Your Hours

Your weekly schedule and your current online status serve different purposes. The schedule records your working hours; the online availability control lets you indicate whether you are ready to receive requests.

Both deserve a check before you begin. Docio’s dashboard can show that you are outside your working hours even when your online switch is on. To receive regular patient requests during a different period, update your saved schedule as well as checking your online status.

When plans change, keep those settings current. Changing your availability does not remove your responsibilities for a visit you have already confirmed.

Make the Journey Part of Your Decision

The same visit can fit very differently into your day depending on its location. Traffic, parking, access to a hotel or building, and the journey afterwards can all affect the time you need.

Docio also lets doctors set a service radius. Use that setting to reflect the distances you are prepared to cover, then consider the actual journey when reviewing a request. A radius measures distance; your decision still needs to account for the circumstances of that visit.

A smaller, manageable area may be a useful starting point while you learn how visits fit around your existing practice.

    Choose Requests You Can Fulfil

Being available does not oblige you to submit a proposal or accept every request. Review the information provided and consider whether the patient’s needs, location and likely time commitment fit your professional scope and capacity.

Once a booking is confirmed, the commitment changes: you need to attend at the agreed location and time. If you cannot fulfil it, the current Physician Agreement requires cancellation through the app as soon as practicable.

This makes thoughtful selection valuable. Decide whether you can deliver the visit before committing to it.

    A Short Availability Checklist

    Before making yourself available, check:

    • Have I saved working hours that match my actual commitments?
    • Is my current online status appropriate?
    • Does my service radius reflect journeys I can realistically undertake?
    • Have I allowed time for travel, the consultation and documentation?
    • Can I fulfil any visit I confirm without conflicting with another commitment?

Docio provides tools for organising this work alongside your existing practice. Suitable requests and patient demand will vary, and availability does not guarantee bookings or earnings.
